The municipality of Nerpio (16.25 S. 49.14 W.) is located southwest of Albacete, thus bordering on the provinces of Jaen to the West, on Granada to the South and Murcia to the East.
With a mean altitude of 1,000 m. above sea level, we find 11 heights above 2.000 m in the Sierras of "Taibilla" and "Las Cabras", with the outstanding pike of "Talón" or "Cagasebo" of 2,082, that is called "the ceiling of the province" and the second in height in Castilla La Mancha.
The municipal territory of 483.83 sq. km follows the basin of the Taibilla River (N.E.S.W) and its affluents flow from the high peaks of the Sierras of Taibilla, Las Cabras, Pincorto and Huebras. The basins of the rivers and streams consist of Jurassic limestones and the rivers have formed V-shaped valleys that only leave space for little farms that take advantage of the abundant springs and lands reclaimed from the woodlands.
This landscape, together with the severe mountain weather, offers an ideal reserve for hunting and livestock breeding.
Nerpio has nowadays 12 villages and a total population of 1,850 inhabitants distributed among 78 populated centers.
It is worth mentioning that in 1826 it had 3,182 inhabitants. In 1891, 4,578 distributed among 99 populated centers, in 1920 it raised to 5,190 inhabitants, and that the maximum population density was recorded in 1950, with 5,538 inhabitants.
Weather
As regards Nerpio´s weather, we can say that it is the continental continuation of the Mediterranean mild weather, characterized by the noticeable daily thermal oscillation and along the year.
Temperatures may vary from -10ºC in winter to 35º/40º in summer. This thermal oscillation alters the biodiversity of the Flora, thus establishing the different "bioclimatic gradients".
The precipitation rate also determines different weather intervals, a dry one in the Center of the zone and a sub-humid one to the South of Nerpio.
